Bluelight

Let's kick it to the wonderful world of Cow Hollow this Wednesday...

BlueLight might be a bit crowded but let's shoot for meeting there at 9pm.

San Francisco, CA 94123

Cross Street: Buchanan Street

The Scene
As the work day ends, this narrow space fills up. A slightly elevated area near the entrance provides blue-upholstered seating in front of picture windows offering prime people-watching onto bustling Union Street. Walls are painted copper or baby blue and adorned with picture-framed mirrors (ideal for scoping 20- and 30-something hotties across the way). Track lighting runs above the lengthy mirror-backed bar, which features a dozen or so tap beers and Skyy vodka martini specials scrawled in cursive. In back, there are a few blue booths and a pool table.

The Draw
Each weeknight offers different deals. Tuesdays feature $1 tacos, $2 Coronas and $6 pints of sweet top-shelf margaritas. Thursdays, the early weekend crowd is privy to select menu items and beers for $3 each. Ten TVs showing satellite sports games are typically kept on mute, while the jukebox pipes out feel-good tunes--everything from Funkadelic to Blind Melon.

Next week's lounge, Magnet, is open until 2pm, but unfortunately no food is served after 4pm, so we'll eat first ~9pm at

In Short
Loud music is usually playing at this small North Beach spot, much to the enjoyment of the hipster staff. The walls of the dining room are covered with photographs, stickers and various oddments. Slices and whole pies come Sicilian style with a thick crust and a variety of toppings. A house specialty is the clam, parsley and garlic pizza.

The Scene
Downstairs, gray and red walls decked with revolving art, red and blue lighting, and a pretty red-lit bar make for a slick vibe. Upstairs, a loft holds a DJ booth, a long red banquette, and mod-style tables and chairs. The space is small and narrow, but high ceilings and big windows keep it from feeling claustrophobic. Servers and bartenders are ultra-friendly and go out of their way to accommodate requests.

The Draw
At lunch, locals and the occasional tourist stop by for superb options like Northwest salad, greens layered with smoked salmon, cranberries and almonds; and sweet mango and yams, baked with cumin and cilantro and served cold. At night, the lights go down and a DJ spins hip-hop and electronica as stylish 20-somethings recline on contemporary furniture with sake and soju cocktails or a glass from the limited but reasonably priced wine list.
